George Marshall

Post by PMarshall » Wed Mar 26, 2014 9:54 am

I am looking for any details about my paternal Grandfather George Marshall.
This is what little I know about him from certificates I have.

George Marshall married Edith Swinn nee Wise in Kilham in 1913, George was a Labourer and 26 years old. His father is William Marshall
In 1919 when my father Richard Henry Marshall was born he was a general labourer and living in Gransmoor and on the marriage certificate in 1949 of my parents he was a general labourer.

No one can remember George Marshall, some family members state he died in 1973/4 others say it was many many years before his wife Ediths death in 1974. Every one states he died in Nafferton although no one remembers his funeral.

if anyone has any information that would be wonderful as i am just trying to piece the missing gaps in my family tree.

Thanks Paul

Edith Wise was born in 1880:

She was the daughter of Brian Wise (b. c1851 Atwick – d. 1881 Skirlaugh District) and Elizabeth Hebdon (bapt. 23 Sep 1855 Skipsea), who married in Skirlaugh District on 25 Mar 1872.

In 1881 Edith and her older sister Joyce were living in Woodmansey with their recently widowed mother Elizabeth at the home of their aunt and uncle Christiana (nee Wise) and William Allen.

Edith’s mother married again in the December quarter of 1885 to John Scaife and in 1891 the family was living at Denby Farm, Rudston:

By 1901 Edith has had an illegitimate daughter, Hilda, and is working as a housekeeper at the home of Tom Scaife, who is possibly a relative (cousin?) of her step-father?:

George Marshall is a little difficult to pin down but I think I’ve found him. If I’m correct, in 1911 he was working at Park Farm, Upton, near Beeford – not far from Skipsea, where Edith’s mother was born:
1911 Census // Park Farm, Upton, Beeford, East Yorkshire
Given Name // Surname // Relationship // Age // Estimated Birth Year // Gender // Birth City // Birth County // Occupation
Robert Sharp // Wharram // Head // 21 // 1890 // Male // Beeford // Yorkshire // Farmer
Alice Maude // Garms // Housekeeper // 36 // 1875 // Female // Scredington // Lincolnshire // Housekeeper
Hilde F // Coates // Servant // 14 // 1897 // Female // Atwick // Yorkshire // Servant
Albert // Fletcher // Servant // 23 // 1888 // Male // Cranswick // Yorkshire // Servant on Farm
John // Watts // Servant // 20 // 1891 // Male // Killingwick // Yorkshire // Servant on Farm
Arthur // Muston // Servant // 20 // 1891 // Male // Baddington // Yorkshire // Servant on Farm
George // Marshall // Servant // 23 // 1888 // Male // Fulstow // Lincolnshire // Servant on Farm
Thomas B // Frankish // Servant // 60 // 1851 // Male // North Dalton // Yorkshire // Shepherd

This may be George’s death record:
England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2007
Name: George Marshall
Birth Date: abt 1887
Date of Registration: Jun 1964
Age at Death: 77
Registration district: Holderness
Inferred County: Yorkshire East Riding
Volume: 2a

There are many Lincolnshire George Marshall birth records in the 1880s but I think this could be the right one.
England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
Name: George Marshall
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1887
Registration district: Louth
Inferred County: Lincolnshire
Volume: 7a
Page: 698

I haven’t found any earlier census records for a George Marshall born in Fulstow, Lincolnshire around 1887 but there is a George who is a little older who was born in Austen Fen, about 3 miles from Fulstow. In 1891 he was living with his parents in Fulstow and in 1901 he was a milkman at a neighbouring farm. Could this be him? Perhaps he got his age wrong in 2011? :

1891 Census // Fulstow, Lincolnshire, England
Given Name // Surname // Relationship // Age // Estimated Birth Year // Gender // Birth City // Birth County // Occupation
William // Marshall // Head // 42 // 1849 // Male // Fulstow // Lincolnshire // Agricultural Labourer
Alice // Marshall // Wife // 25 // 1866 // Female // North Thoresby // Lincolnshire //
William // Marshall // Son // 13 // 1878 // Male // Fulstow // Lincolnshire // Scholar
James // Marshall // Son // 10 // 1881 // Male // Austen Fen // Lincolnshire // Scholar
George // Marshall // Son // 8 // 1883 // Male // Austen Fen // Lincolnshire // Scholar
Cristopher // Marshall // Son // 7 // 1884 // Male // Austen Fen // Lincolnshire // Scholar
Mary // Marshall // Daughter // 5 // 1886 // Female // Goulceby // Lincolnshire //
Enoch // Marshall // Son // 3 // 1888 // Male // North Thoresby // Lincolnshire //
George // Robinson // Lodger // 55 // 1836 // Male // Not Known // // Agricultural Labourer

1901 Census // Hawthorn Villa, Main Street, Fulstow, Lincolnshire, England
Given Name // Surname // Relationship // Age // Estimated Birth Year // Gender // Birth City // Birth County // Occupation
John R // Mottey // Head // 42 // 1859 // Male // Fulstow // Lincolnshire // Farmer
Annie // Mottey // Wife // 34 // 1867 // Female // Grimsby // Lincolnshire //
Frederick R // Mottey // Son // 9 // 1892 // Male // Fulstow // Lincolnshire //
Alice // Mottey // Daughter // 7 // 1894 // Female // Fulstow // Lincolnshire //
Ethel // Mottey // Daughter // 5 // 1896 // Female // Fulstow // Lincolnshire //

NB: William Marshall’s children listed on the 1891 census [except Enoch] were all born to William’s first wife, Mary Elizabeth Sheriff (Sherriff / Sherriffe), who was born about 1854 in Grainthorpe, Lincolnshire. Mary died in 1888 and William married Alice Ann Lingard (b. c1866 North Thoresby, Lincolnshire) just before the 1891 census was taken. Enoch was Alice's son - registered as Enoch Lingard in Dec Qtr 1887 in Louth District.

I hope you pick this post up Paul, we share the same grandfather. My mother was Sylvia Marshall (Slimmer/Wright) you might remember her as auntie Molly.
I can give you other information if you contact me, Lesley

Hi Lesley sorry we took a break from the family tree as it becomes quite a journey.

We would love to hear from you, I know nothing about my fathers side of the family and I would really love to know more.

Hi Paul,

For some reason this forum won't let me send a private message, can you send me an email and I will reply?

I quite understand the search for family can be quite daunting and apprehensive to as you don't know what you may find.

Norma (my sister) and I spent a lot of our school holidays with granny and granddad Marshall as we called them. Our father
Albert Slimmer had died when I was just two.
We grew up in Hull but often went on the bus to Nafferton. George died around 1972 and was turned 90. Edith died in 1975 age 96.
I was at both funerals first at Nafferton church and then to the crem at Scarboro.

Hope we can chat more soon, Lesley
